Nicki Minaj recently taped a freestyle cipher for the 2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards with Joe Budden and Wale, but stomping with the boys is nothing new for her. Minaj is on the same team as two of the Hottest MCs in the Game: Lil Wayne and Drake. She’s been finding ways to stick out.

“The Young Money single will officially be out in a week or so,” she said on the BET Hip-Hop Awards red carpet. “My single is slated to come out in November. We already have it, just waiting on the timing.”

Minaj said her official single will not be a street banger from the mixtape she has out now, which has been getting burn in her hometown of NYC.

” ‘I Get Crazy,’ that’s not my official single,” she clarified. “That is a record that was on Beam Me Up Scotty with Wayne. New York has been showing it love. Big up to Hot 97. Everywhere actually has been playing it. But it’s not my official single. [The single] might be a record called ‘Married in the Club. But we’ll see.”

Nicki’s debut LP is still untitled, but the sexy Queens native said the album should be out in the second quarter of 2010. During a recent radio interview, Nicki told Angela Yee she’s also appearing on upcoming songs for Mariah Carey, Usher and Cassie.

Andre 3000 Talks Hottest MC List

9 09 2009

andre3000

No question Andre has just about all of the credentials to reign on the Hottest MCs list — except one. To say we caught him between cycles is an understatement. The ATLien hasn’t dropped an LP since 2003’s The Love Below (OK, the “Idlewild” soundtrack if you want to get technical — but even that was three years ago). But making the list has never been about putting out albums — the roundtable talk is always about how he makes his guest appearances an event. Dre certainly lit up the airwaves late last year on John Legend’s “Green Light,” but his verses since then have been tougher to find. Stacks hasn’t been too prolific, so will the handful of gems be enough to get a ranking this year?

In a rare interview, Andre talked to us about the past Hottest MCs lists, the concept of them and where he’d like to see himself stacking up against the competition.

“The thing about these hip-hop lists… it’s like, ‘How can you make a list because it’s so many people you leave off that a lot of people may disagree with?’ If you have 10 guys in a room [debating], that’s their list. It can’t be a world list, ’cause it’s a lot of people… I’m surprised Ludacris is never on there — he’s one of the dopest. Black Thought ain’t on there — he’s killin’ a lot of people. Then you got too many opinions. You have people that come up to me in the streets and say certain things. I’m like, ‘Well, that’s their opinion.’

I just say, ‘Man, everybody do your thing.’ I’d rather be #2 and everybody know I should be #1, than to be #1. Then I have somewhere to go.”

50 Cent Defends Soulja Boy

4 09 2009

Picture kinda dark, My bad… Props to Nahright!!!

Last month, 50 Cent and Soulja Boy excited some fans and confused others during a West Coast stop on Young Money Presents: The America’s Most Wanted Music Festival. Fif stepped onstage in California and performed with his much younger club-floor-catering peer. Those in attendance seemed to love it, but on the Net there was speculation about how and why the collaboration came together.

Well, 50 Cent told us last week exactly why he wanted to come onstage with Soulja Boy. The answer is … well, the General doesn’t have to answer to anyone. The truth is, 50 and Soulja are cool. “I’d understand to not like the guy who’s a one-hit wonder. But he’s had two #1 records off his follow up album. As an actual artist, people may criticize him at different points.. like the first song, cuz of what kind of hit it was. I thought it was exciting the concept of a 16 year old kid writing, producing, and having his friends around him, creating a dance.”

He even said that Soulja’s popularity even resonates in Eminem’s crib. “I was at Em’s house,” 50 said recently. “He has a basketball court that doubles as [daughter] Hailie’s dance studio. That dance studio has the hardwood floors. I watched the kids do the Soulja Boy dance to the song. They’re into organized dancing. That was something they were into. They’re a world way from where Soulja Boy comes from. But it’s translating and it’s actually a hit record and he continues to make hit records that work.” So, Fif says to kick off his homie’s back and let the teenager do his thing.

Young Jeezy wants to make his own ‘Hood’s hottest MC list’

28 08 2009

“Even with me, when y’all first put in the bracket, some people think different,” he explained. “Some people wanna be a lyricist. Me, I wanna be real. It’s gotta be different categories.”

Jeezy does agree you could be real and not be hot.

“You can,” Young noted. “There’s a lot of cats that do. You gotta get that list though. There’s a lot of cats underground you might not even know about that everybody listens to.”

“You shouldn’t put a Nas on there. Or a KRS-One. That’s crazy to put those cats in the same category. They think differently. That’s why we should do mine. … It’s gonna cause more controversy than you think. People gonna be calling being like, ‘He ain’t really like that.’ ”
